Anand could have capitalized this scene and concentrated more on how the Rowdy CM cleans up the current political mess with his raw attitude however, there is very little of Rowdy CM and more of Tamil Nadu's political references. Now, this is the entry of Rowdy CM and the wait for scenes like this becomes never-ending. The bus torch scene is very emotional, dead drop serious and Vijay's intensity is on display here he silences those annoying media personnel with just "SHHH" and shows how's its done. At this, the young CM flips TV channels and asks his friends to take comfort watching his party's channel. There is this scene where the clueless new CM is questioned by the opposition about his credentials. But for Sam CS's background music (that running score), nothing is there to elevate him.ĭirector Anand Shankar does pen some really witty scenes here and there. The whole second half lacks a single hero-elevation moment worth its sal. A veteran politician who has been the old CM's trusted lieutenant finds the hero's struggles with 'pancha kattu' so cute. The outgoing CM speaks like a petty politician, eerily asking his supporters not to immolate themselves for Rs. Varun is introduced as the one who has been leading his party's youth wing for years and there is no counter-question from the media. Why on earth is he not moved by major problems, especially when he is shown to be someone large-hearted enough to fund orphanages? Again, hackneyed ideas that have been done to death. The CM is moved by the death of a girl, by the impending floods, so on and so forth. 20,000 crores looks like a caricature straight out of an ETV serial. Suspects simply keep talking about their plans on phones and the CM doesn't even think of shadowing them until it's too late? For his advice, he just has a journo and nobody else? Round-tripping involving thousands of crores is narrated without any sense of edginess. It's almost as if she is attracted to him! A political enemy may want to end someone's career but why would he or she commit the historic blunder of rising a smart rival's profile and risk her career? Suddenly, a rival reaches out to the much-troubled CM. Where the film does a major mistake is in narrating the survival of the accidental Chief Minister Varun amid consummate antagonists. The narration of 'NOTA' may be way too simplistic, but the story is not. You love things to be more straightforward. If you find this story muddled, there is a reason. A patriarch who is hell-bent on teaching a lesson to a dynast a complex web of deceit involving round-tripping and tax havens heavyweights who seek to topple the system but who are never seen in the foreground. It's because they are all familiar characters. While watching 'Bharat Ane Nenu', you didn't find any villain unsettling. The story of 'NOTA' is not about those familiar corrupted cabals who game the system day in and day out, about whom we all read every day. In this, he gets help from unusual quarters.Īll the while, a powerful Godman seeks to game the system from outside. It's now up to Varun to prevent inimical forces from targeting him, his little sister, and his government. This is when an assassination bid is made on Vasudev, whose backstory is layered. As Vasudev gets convicted, he exhorts Varun to rise to the occasion and lead the state ably while staving off the enemies (among them a young woman dynast). Varun reluctantly takes up the post, only to discover that his party treats the lives of innocents like All-Out treats mosquitos.Ī senior journalist (played by Sathyaraj) has a soft corner for Varun. The seasoned politician anoints his son Varun (Vijay Deverakonda) as the state's dummy CM. Here is our review of the entertainer.Ĭhief Minister Vasudev (Nasser) resigns from the office as he is facing an investigation into a scam. 'NOTA', starring Vijay Deverakonda in the lead, hits the screens this Friday. So why do some bosses give sickness short shrift?Īs new technologies and instant connectivity have infiltrated global businesses, a new work dynamic has emerged. Medical professionals agree that staying at home during the early stages of the flu – the first two days after catching the virus when the risk of contagion is at its highest – is essential for the health of both the affected workers and their colleagues.įor unlucky people whose employers pressure them not to skip work, knowing how to effectively communicate the need for time off is a crucial step towards preserving both their own health and productivity, and that of coworkers. It’s the time of year when the air is coldest and driest, the ideal conditions for the influenza virus to transmit quickly. The flu season - which peaks between December and February in the northern hemisphere - is when absences spike. Studies show that mistrust and fear of judgment from bosses have forced an increasing number of employees to come to work when sick. Instead, experts say a shifting work culture is to blame for creating a stigma around taking time off. It’s difficult to attribute the change to general advancements in medicine, says Kylie Ainslie, a research associate in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at Imperial College London people aren’t necessarily getting sick less often. Where the average employee once spent 7.2 days a year at home due to illness, they took just 4.1 days off in 2017. The number of sick days taken by UK workers has almost halved since 1993, according to the Office for National Statistics. Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste In a small environment with a lot of scannable objects this can mean the tricorder is constantly beeping, which isn’t really helpful. Resurgence tries to help you out by having the tricorder beep when you’re near something that can be scanned, but it doesn’t distinguish between something that can be scanned and something you already have scanned. What you need to scan isn’t always obvious, and there were times I spent a few minutes wandering around the same room looking for the last piece of information I needed. The only annoyance among them is the tricorder segments, which ask you to scan objects to solve puzzles. Best of all, these segments are never one-offs, so you’re building skills that can be used in more difficult, stressful scenarios later on. I particularly enjoyed the flying and shooting segments because they required me to make quick decisions. There’s a lot of variety here: you’ll fly shuttles, fire phasers, command the Resolute from the bridge, solve engineering puzzles, scan things with your tricorder, and sneak around hostile environments, and nearly all of it is engaging and feels like what we should be doing in a Star Trek game. Of course, all of those dialogue options and moral dilemmas are broken up by Resurgence’s moment-to-moment action, which is respectable. But the lack of meaningful consequences made them feel like filler in hindsight. I don’t regret the choices I made they were set up extremely well and emotionally effective when I made them. Later on, the group’s leader thanked me for my choice – and then didn’t really appear again, even when it would have made sense for them to do so. The decision felt awful (in a good way) – there was no good choice – but I did what I thought was right and what the character I was playing would do. Ultimately, I had to choose between gravely injuring one of my crew members and potentially sacrificing that group. In one extreme example I was sent to rescue a group of people by beaming them away from impending disaster. That’s inevitable in a game like Resurgence – the story has to continue no matter what you do – but it never feels good when it happens. Sometimes, you’ll make what feels like an important decision only to realize later that it didn’t matter much. That said, I do wish the consequences of certain choices had more effect on the story. Better still, I felt I understood Jara and Carter more because I had just as much time to work through the issues as they did. The timer was fast enough to make me think on my feet but not so overwhelming that I felt paralyzed by indecision. Sometimes it’s fast and sometimes it’s slow, but you have to respond – or not, but choosing not to decide is a choice in and of itself.I never felt rushed during big moments, but I knew I had to be decisive – and so did the characters I was controlling. You’ll have to make these choices quickly, too, because you’re on a timer. How well you do as Carter affects what happens to the ship, but the decisions you make as Jara affect Carter if something goes wrong. In one early scene, Carter is out on the ship’s hull repairing a critical system, while Jara is on the bridge. Jara and Carter rarely directly interact with one another but both of them play important roles in the story, and Dramatic Labs does a good job showing how the decisions made by one of them can impact the other. It gives you a better idea of the stakes for everyone aboard – problems apply to more than the folks on the bridge, who knew! – and makes scenarios more exciting. Other times it means rerouting power to a critical system or taking a spacewalk to repair the Resolute. Sometimes, that means giving orders from the bridge or leading an away team. The perspective effectively bounces between Jara and Carter depending on the situation. Amber Ī transparent golden gemstone formed in ancient times by solidified tree sap. It is noted for the magical property to absorb electricity. Amaratha Ī valuable soft green gemstone unique to Faerûn, where it also called "shield-stone". Algae Ī type of opaque quartz with dark brown wavy patterns, worth around 10 gp. In folk belief, Alexandrite is reputed to give good omens. It is worth around 50 gp.Ī transparent dark green gemstone worth around 500gp. Alestone Īn opaque brown or yellowish-brown semi-precious stone common in Faerûn. Alamandine Ī gem worth around 125 gp per carat. Agni mani Īn opaque black gem made of meteoric glass, worth around 10 gp. Individual stones can vary significantly in price, often by as much as 50%, and unique instances of gemstones can be worth several times the typical stone of that type. The prices and descriptions below are the typical for a typical gemstone. For example, a miner who follows the god Hextor and unexpectedly discovers a vein of malachite may believe it is a sign that his deity is pleased with him. Many gemstones also have religious significance to the followers of certain deities. While it is merely a superstitious folk belief that simply possessing a gemstone grants any magical benefit, there is some truth to it, as gemstones are often used in the production of expensive potions and inks used in scrolls, as well as vital components of various spells. Many gemstones are reputed to have innate magical properties. Jewelry, art objects and magic items are often inlaid with gemstones. Uses Īppraising the value of a gemstone often requires a level of skill, so unlike coinage they are not widely used as basic currency. In large cities, the value of gemstones can fluctuate considerably based on the fashions of the wealthy. Even then, many factors affect the gem's final value, including color, clarity, impurities and the shape of its cut. An uncut rough gemstone is worth considerably less than one finished by a professional gemcutter. Gemstones are typically cut into polyhedral shapes. The cheapest ornamental stones such as obsidian are worth around 10 gp per carat, while valuable gems such as diamond and ruby are worth around 200 gp per carat. An exceedingly rare few weigh as much as a thousand carats. Gemstones are weighed in carats, with most weighing only one or two carats. Fancy stones are further divided into fancy (worth around 100 gp) and precious (worth around 500 gp), while gemstones are divided into gemstones (worth around 1,000 gp) and jewels (worth 5,000 gp or more). Gemstones are traditionally divided into four categories which determine their value: ornamental stones, such as malachite and lapis lazuli, worth around 10 gold pieces semi-precious stones, such as onyx or moonstone, worth around 50 gp fancy stones, such as amethyst and topaz, worth around 100 gp and true gem stones, such as emerald and diamond, worth upwards of 1,000 gp. The most priceless of gemstones are worth as much as one million gold pieces, although these are exceedingly rare, and most adventurers will go their entire career without ever finding one. Value Įven the least valuable semi-precious gemstones are worth around 10 gold pieces. Over one hundred varieties of gemstones have been identified and named.Īs minerals, gems are generally resistant to fire, although lightning is known to destroy gemstones. Some have streaks or patterns running through them, while others are pure. Gemstones have a wide variety of physical traits, including size, hardness, color, and translucency. At this pay rate, he might be impossible to trade for the next few seasons without incentivizing a team to take on his contract. That obviously didn't happen, putting Portland in a wholly troublesome spot with Grant. He simply isn't worth this kind of coin-his 14.0 career player efficiency rating is actually a tick below league-average-and the only (relatively) reasonable rationale for the overpay was to keep Lillard happy. He's a fine player, but the only team that leaned on him as a primary option was the Detroit Pistons, who went 43-111 during his two-year tenure. If Dame couldn't elevate this roster, who on earth is supposed to do that now? Good luck if the answer is Grant. Portland, for the record, went a combined 60-104 over the past two seasons, and that was with Lillard making 87 appearances. "Our goal is to win to keep moving forward," Blazers general manager Joe Cronin told reporters. Portland insists that isn't the case, though. And guess what happened? Lillard decided he was done with Portland, anyway.Īssuming the Blazers eventually grant Lillard's wish-at least by trading him somewhere, if not to his preferred destination of the Miami Heat-you'd think they would want to immediately pivot into a long-term rebuild around Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe. Well, as soon as the market opened, they routed every Brink's truck in the Pacific Northwest in Grant's direction and quickly got his commitment on a five-year, $160 million deal. The Portland Trail Blazers likely entered this offseason under the belief that any hope they had in keeping Damian Lillard happy began with bringing back Jerami Grant. There's a non-zero chance that one rough patch could get him squeezed out of the rotation entirely, especially if Terry does anything of note. And ironing out his weaknesses will be a challenge when the Bulls can't guarantee him the developmental minutes he needs.Īs for Dosunmu himself, he must be thrilled with his new pay rate, but he has to be worried about the minutes crunch that could be coming his way. In other words, he has more question marks than you'd like for someone collecting a $7 million annual salary. For his career, Chicago has fared 7.4 points worse per 100 possessions with him than without. He is an unreliable (and sometimes unwilling) shooter from distance, not a natural playmaker and limited as an off-the-dribble attacker. Theoretically, he'll have chances to rise above this role, but his game needs a lot of work. 18 pick-ever show signs of life, that could put yet another obstacle in front of Dosunmu. He appears to be, at best, fifth in the backcourt rotation behind Zach LaVine, Jevon Carter, Alex Caruso and Coby White. Who were they bidding against, exactly? And what gives them confidence he'll even have the chance to live up to this contract? Instead, they effectively waited for money to dry up around the Association, then gave Dosunmu a bigger bag than anyone anticipated (three years, $21 million). If only the Bulls had stuck to that plan. It wasn't the worst strategy, as the combo guard had exceeded expectations as a rookie and then fell well short of them during his follow-up season. The Chicago Bulls seemed content to let the market determine Ayo Dosunmu's pay rate in restricted free agency. I’m going to start with a simple free effect iZotope calls Vinyl that lends everything a scratchy, lo-fi sound which, when paired with some of the pad sounds from PadShop, yields some beautifully dirty sounds that are ideal for filling out the middle of a track. Now, it might seem slightly odd to talk about external effects in a Cubase tutorial, but bear with me – we can create some very interesting sounds. These are some of the more basic things that Cubase can do using the internal effects that come with the software, but how about external plug-ins that can manipulate the sound in totally different ways? Don’t worry too much about trying to get everything as you want it within the synth plug-in itself it’s more about using all of the tools that are available in different ways. This is a perfect way of creating screaming lead lines that, in my opinion, when played using the right synth actually sound closer to a high-gain guitar than some of the alleged guitar sounds in the HALion sampler!Įverything we’ve looked at so far might seem pretty obvious to a lot of you however, it is easy to think about the sound we make with our synthesizers as a finished article rather than using inserts and other effects as part of the sound-design process – I’m trying to encourage you to experiment with sound. From within the plug-in you can then select preamplifier stompboxes, amp type, cabinet type and post-amplifier stompboxes, including reverb and EQ. Cubase has two amplifier simulators including the excellent VST Amp Rack, which can be added to the signal chain by clicking another slot on the inserts and selecting Distortion>VST Amp Rack. For those of you thinking that adding a filter to an existing synth seems a little pointless, if you’re working with some of the older synths within Cubase the filters are a little different from what you might expect, so the addition of a regular filter is useful when programming.Īnother technique that can make a real difference to the sound of a synthesizer is putting it through guitar stompboxes and amplifiers. The MorphFilter allows for movement to be created and automated between two different filters, with a range of low-, high- and band-pass filters available to choose from. The StepFilter creates two 16×18 grids that enable rhythmic changes of filter settings with each beat, allowing for a depth change of both frequency cutoff and resonance. To add a StepFilter, open the Edit window or the mixer and in one of the insert slots select Filter>StepFilter (or MorphFilter if you prefer) and it will add the effect to your signal chain. Now, it might seem a bit superfluous to add a filter to a synthesizer, but the StepFilter and MorphFilter do provide some movement in a sound which can be synchronised with a track to create some totally different textures. Let’s start with a basic effect on a synth lead, such as a filter. Once you’ve settled on something we can start recording or inputting our part manually so we have some notes in the Arrange window to work with For the purposes of learning about patching and sound design in general there is no harm in choosing a preset, particularly if you are still getting to grips with basic synth programming. When the track is loaded, find a suitable sound as your starting point. I have chosen Retrologue as it gives the basic lead sounds that I want to work with, ready for further manipulation. Select the instrument you want to work with and click on Add Track. Let’s begin by creating a synth track and getting a sound loaded (choose Project>Add Track>Instrument). For those who also use Reason, the ability to patch will be nothing unusual, but within Cubase, sending a synth via some of the effects and plug-ins greatly increases the capabilities of the instruments. For those of us who grew up in hardware studios and learned how to operate the synths of the day it is easy to forget the need to physically patch instruments in the age of software synths. The purpose of this article is to develop a wider arsenal of tools for sound design – manipulating synth sounds in new ways to create previously unachievable sounds. It’s time, therefore, to take a look at some of the slightly more convoluted ways of treating synths in Cubase and how these can be transformed into new instruments and sounds.
